Pavilion Paradise in Rockwall, TX: How Buildometry Created the Ultimate Backyard Entertainment Space

From Mediocre Patios to Stunning Outdoor Oasis

When builders cut corners on patios or windows block outdoor views, homeowners are left frustrated. At Buildometry, we transform overlooked backyards into breathtaking entertainment spaces. That’s exactly what we accomplished for a Rockwall family facing obstructed windows and a subpar patio.

Outdoor living spaces have become essential home extensions. Industry data shows 63% of new homes include patios, and homeowners dedicate 25% of remodeling budgets to outdoor upgrades. Fire pits and covered patios are top features for 2025. A custom pavilion solves real problems, whether you’re battling awkward windows, poor drainage, or simply need usable space.

Why Choose a Pavilion Over a Traditional Patio?

When your home has a wall of windows, attaching a covered structure to the house creates problems: it blocks natural light, obstructs views, and diminishes interior functionality. Our clients faced this exact situation. We designed a stunning 280-square-foot pavilion that sits independently, creating a purpose-built entertainment area while preserving their home’s flow.

We chose steel 4-by-4 posts wrapped with Hardy board and finished in sleek black paint, paired with substantial 6-by-12 beams for large open spans. The tongue-and-groove pecan cedar ceiling contrasts beautifully with the black structural elements. This black-and-cedar combination is trending because it bridges rustic charm with modern sophistication. Gutters and downspouts protect your investment by preventing water damage and erosion.

Concrete That Lasts

Your pavilion’s foundation is everything. We created a 1.5- to 2-inch overlay on the existing patio using stamp-stained concrete. This technique is both practical and beautiful, mimicking natural stone with subtle color variations while being forgiving to chips and cracks.

One critical detail: the turndown. The concrete extends down below ground level, creating a continuous vertical face rather than an abrupt stop at the grass line. This transforms the appearance from amateur to professional. The concrete flows from the original patio through to the pavilion and out to the fire pit area, creating one unified surface.

Fire Pit Design That Functions and Mesmerizes

A well-designed fire pit becomes the heart of your backyard gathering space. We constructed a 16-foot circular fire pit with a 5-foot burning area. It’s large enough to feel impactful but not so large that guests feel distant.

We used white ledger stone as the exterior cladding for an upscale, finished appearance. Beneath sits fire brick, with solid block construction between the ledger stone and fire brick. Inside, fire mortar withstands extreme temperatures. A crucial element many DIY builders miss: floor drainage with an underground popup system. When it rains, water drains away instead of pooling in a muddy mess.

Planning Smart: Utilities and Space

Smart homeowners think ahead. Our clients wanted an outdoor kitchen with gas appliances eventually. We ran the gas line during initial construction and capped it for future use. This saves thousands of dollars and prevents future construction headaches.

Our 14-by-20-foot pavilion (280 square feet) feels spacious and comfortably accommodates 10 to 12 people. It’s equivalent to a large indoor kitchen or living room. Currently featuring mobile equipment, it will eventually house a built-in kitchen, leaving ample room for dining and lounge seating. The design evolves with your needs.

Bringing It All Together

Transforming a backyard from disappointing to extraordinary requires expertise, quality materials, and thoughtful planning. The roof provides essential shade during summer, reducing temperatures while allowing air circulation. For cooler evenings, your fire pit becomes the focal point, extending the entertaining season from spring through fall.

At Buildometry, we’ve perfected this process through hundreds of projects across the greater Rockwall area. Whether dealing with inadequate patios, obstructing windows, poor drainage, or a blank canvas, we have solutions. Our recent pavilion project cost $51,000 and took 5 to 6 weeks from concept to completion, including permits, renderings, and all finish work.
